Profile

The Chief Financial Officer has primary day-to-day responsibility for planning, implementing, managing and controlling all financial-related activities of the company, including its subsidiaries. This includes direct responsibility for accounting, finance, internal audit, forecasting, strategic financial planning, M&A analysis and negotiations, etc.  Oversees all treasury activities, including the care and custody of funds and other financial and investment assets.  Assists the Chief Executive Officer and EVP-Operations in reviewing financial statistics and trends to support overall operational planning.  Provides management and staff leadership.

 

  • Direct and oversee all aspects of the Accounting & Finance functions of the organization, including preparation of all financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, reporting, tax returns, and governmental agency reports.  Provides oversight to all units of the department including the Financial Planning and Analysis, Model Audit Rule, Internal Audit, Financial Reporting, Billing, Procurement, and Payroll units.
  • Provide direction and expertise in Statutory Accounting questions regarding new pronouncements from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).  Statutory accounting guidance is also required for new company endeavors (for example proper accounting treatment under a Mutual Holding Company structure).
  • Provide leadership and is accountable for staffing, coaching, training and development, performance and workforce management.
  • Ensure that effective internal controls are in place and safeguards compliance with Statutory Accounting Principles and applicable federal, state and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting.
  • Provide leadership in the development for the continuous evaluation of short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
    • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/ strategies and regulatory action.
    • Establish and maintain strong relationships with senior executives and leadership in multiple departments to identify needs and seek the full range of business solutions.
    • Provide executive management with advice on the financial implications of business activities.
    • Responsible for analyzing the financial and strategic benefits and costs of potential acquisitions, business partnerships, and new company endeavors.
  • Plan and direct Corporate Treasury activities, including the care and custody of funds and other financial assets and the supervision of banking, credit, and investments of the corporation. 
  • Serve as CM Group’s chief investment officer, analyzing and making investments to ensure the company has a robust and profitable portfolio.
  • Ensure credibility of the Accounting & Finance group by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends and forecasts.
  • Manage processes for financial forecasting, budgets and consolidation and reporting to the Company.
  • Work with the Chief Executive Officer and EVP-Operations in the periodic and annual reviews of loss and loss adjusting expense reserves with the actuaries.
  • Provide oversight and direction of annual AM Best meeting and act as ongoing point of contact with AM Best analyst.
  •  Along with the Chief Risk Officer, acts as a representative of the company on the board of Mutual Reinsurance.
  • Serve as member of the CM Foundation sub-committee responsible for review of charitable donation requests.  Serve on the CM Foundation as a board member and is responsible for reporting financials of the foundation to foundation’s board.
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance is required. MBA is highly desirable.
  • CPA and/or CMA required.
  • 10+ years in progressively responsible financial leadership roles, preferably in the commercial insurance industry, including a minimum of five years in a management role with significant exposure at the Board level.
  • Financial leadership experience exhibiting a strong knowledge and application of Statutory Accounting Principles at the corporate level.
  • Cross-functional leaderwith exceptional communication skills and a unique vision for addressing complex situations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate and manage well at all levels of the organization and with staff at remote locations essential.
  • Excellent presentation preparation and delivery skills.
  • Strong problem solving and creative skills and the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
  • Ability to travel as required.
