Each spring. the teams of the National Hockey League compete for the game's most famous championship trophy, the Stanley Cup. It is named for Lord Frederick Stanley, the 16th Earl of Derby, who was the Governor General of Canada when he commissioned the silver cup in March 1892. At that time, the cup was known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge cup, and its first winner was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association hockey club in 1893. The National Hockey League would not be formed more than two decades, on Nov. 26, 1917. Ironically, Stanley never witnessed a championship game nor attended a presentation of his trophy, having returned to his native England in the middle of the 1893 season.
